The Best Is Yet to Come
A telematic electroacoustic performance with Seiyoung Jang, combining improvised music, CrackleMask, and sampled recordings.
About the Performance
The Best Is Yet to Come is a telematic electroacoustic performance with Seiyoung Jang, combining improvised music, CrackleMask, and sampled recordings.
Some of the musical material emerged from my teaching at North Carolina State University during the COVID-19 pandemic. With limited access to recording equipment, I adapted my digital audio production course, focused on journalism and advertising, to use primarily computers and phones for recording, editing, and production.
One classroom assignment introduced students to sampling and breakbeat manipulation using the drum break from the Winstons' Amen, Brother. Students were tasked with cutting up and reconstructing the break into their own musical material. Some of my in-class examples subsequently became material for this performance.
Performing remotely with Seiyoung Jang, I used CrackleMask alongside these sampled materials and recordings including Kimberly Guilfoyle's speech at the 2020 Republican National Convention, Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville's 1860 recording of Au clair de la lune, dungchen festival horns from Bhutan, and a kookaburra recording.
